Square or Rectangular Steam Mop HeadI’d wondered if there was a benefit to choosing a steam mop with a rectangular mop head over one with a triangular shape and I just found a big one.

This is just one of many, seemingly small questions that have popped into my head while researching the different models. Yes, I think its even starting to impact my dreams at night.

As a consumer, though, I can’t help noticing there are these two different shapes and it causes me to think – why did the manufacturers do this? There has to be some reason, right?

It can’t just be because the designer at one company has always liked rectangles while another has always liked triangles. There has to be a purpose.

For all I know, the reason could be as simple as being able to use smaller packaging and reduce costs.

While steam mopping one of the bathroom’s last night, though, I discovered one reason you might consider going with the rectangular shape.

You know that trouble spot you have behind every toilet? My triangle shaped steam mop head doesn’t fit back there. I’ve been doing that part by hand but it dawned on me that a rectangular head would have no problem.

Behind the Toilet

I would think one that swivels, too, is best of all but most of them do these days.

I have four toilets in my house and that means four times a week I’m reaching back behind one to wipe up whatever dust and junk has accumulated and can’t be reached any other way.

Now, the little brush attachment on my vacuum will get back there but that can only do so much.

If you’re trying to decide between a steam mop with a triangle shaped head and one with a rectangular head, consider your toilets and anything else that might you’ll have to work around to thoroughly clean your floors – behind the toilet, between the toilet and the tub, between the wall and your refrigerator and between your washer and dryer.

  1. I am trying to wrap my head around this (ha-ha)

Does the rectangular head bend? Otherwise it seems like it would still be hard to get behind that space behind the toilet.

    1. Rose – the head pivots in either direction but it’s really that if you put it flush against the wall then the one half of the mop can reach behind the toilet. Then you can approach that space behind the toilet from the other direction and get to it with the other end of the mop and you should be able to get to the entire area that way.
